Fan is heading for a $10 million plus total Overseas as it stands at $9.25 million plus after ten days. This will be tenth Shahrukh Khan film to cross $10 million Overseas. In total 21 films have crossed $10 million so almost half the $10 million plus grossers are Shahrukh Khan starrers.
The others that have crossed $10 million are Kabhi Alvida Na Kehna, Om Shanti Om, My Name Is Khan, Ra. One, Don 2, Jab Tak Hai Jaan, Chennai Express, Happy New Year and Dilwale. The Worldwide total of Fan is around 172 crore.
The film has under performed in most overseas markets though has scored in the Gulf with business of $3.5 million apprx.
I am amazed about the pertinent different reception in different countries :)...and honestly, I like the difference in reception...I think, FAN is a very intelligent movie (not a we-cover-it-all entertainer) with poignant dialogues and multi-layered 'messages'. Each time I watched it, I overheard commentaries coming from audience like "there is no ShahRukh", "now he (Gaurav) gives him something to digest(to Aryan)", "don't touch at the family", "see, they hate this" (Aryan in London after Mme Tussaud-incident...about Aryan's stardom), "yep, he's fake" (Aryan) - "no, he isn't, the boy is fake"...aaahhh, what a movie!!!

I posted this earlier. Will just do it one more time (last time)
FAN is one of those movies, which, even if you love it, you might not want to re-watch in the theater - it is heavy and dark. The FAN team intended it to be this way, otherwise they would have copped out by adding songs and romance and a little bit of humor around the story to release the tension (and quite possibly ruined the movie)
It can have excellent WOM, but if that does not translate to repeat viewers it is not going to pick up at the BO. It is fairly simple isn't it?
FAN/Gaurav/Aryan will be talked about for years to come. That surely amounts for something?
I met up with a few people at a function on the weekend, people who are of Indian background who are positive about Shahrukh but not diehard fans. They had all been to see the film and all gave pretty much the same response when I asked how they liked it. There was a slight hesitation as if gathering their thoughts then they said they liked it, it's a good film, but it's not much fun. For people wanting a bit of light entertainment at the movies it's a bit confronting, a bit dark. It doesn't invite multiple viewings with family and friends if you just want a fun night out.
I'm sure the film makers are quite comfortable with this, They wouldn't expect everyone to turn into film analysts overnight. They have made the film they wanted, and hopefully they are damn proud of it. It's a shame the stupid media have to put a negative spin on it to get their headlines.
This is my objection with the audience. When Dilwale and Bajirao clashed, Bajirao earned way more than Dilwale in the Christmas weekend where they were supposed to go with family. Dilwale was definitely more entertaining and family oriented than Bajirao even though the latter was more critically applauded. Now when SRK has given a quality film like FAN with a breathtaking performance and strong critics reviews, they can't go with family because it's not entertaining and too dark? It just does not add up.
Each movie on its own...I don't like to compare Dilwale, BM and FAN. I know for a fact that there are/were people going for a second or third (or even more) view for Dilwale or for FAN...they have their reasons to do so....and it's okay for me. The kind of entertainment people like is - fortunately - various and variable ...and who wants fun would not find it in the dominant part of FAN
BOI stating the obvious, but thought of sharing anyways:
Q. What is the affect of Fan after average response of Dilwale on the career of Shahrukh Khan as it is worst performing film for a long time? Ans. Nothing. The commercial event film with him released on the right day will still be expected to go over 35 or 40 crore nett on day one. Fan hit 19 crore on day one which is simply a far too bigger number for such a film. Content for a limited audience must also get a limited initial otherwise fall is inevitable as majority of the audience rejects it. J.Dhar
