Sultan's director says that Dangal will be better than Sultan Don't know what to make of this .. I kind of assumed that it would be based on the actors involved in the two projects, but apparently Dangal has a very emotional father-daughter relationship at its core
Also the directors from the two movies met before filming to check if there weren't too many similarities - so most likely this Aamir being miffed with Sultan is all hogwash
If I was Amir I would also get miffed especially because Amir and Salman were considered Close friends and Salman very well knew about Dangal and the effort Amir is putting for the same. Still he has hijacked his project and also releasing 4 months prior to Dangal. I would rather say there is NO SMOKE without FIRE.
Don't think there was any hijack. Both parties knew about each other's project as is mentioned in that interview/article
At the time, Ali had no idea that a film was getting made on Babita and Geeta Phogat. He continues, “It’s bizarre that when I got to know it, I made a call to Dangal director, Nitesh Tiwari and I said, “Yaar, you are making a film on wrestling and even my script is based on that. Let’s meet and discuss the scripts. I said, ‘Ek doosre ki scripts padh lete hai, agar kuch common hoga toh abhi nikaal denge.’”
And the stories don't seem too similar either. Sultan is a fictitious story about a wrestler's ups and downs, while Dangal is a biopic
Is this his way of coming back at Salman khan... Steal some thunder from Sultan... While sultan promotions are on full swing, Aamir khan can ride the wave to steal some free publicity and at the same time persuade some viewers to start comparing in anticipation... Why watch Sultan when you can wait for DANGAL
Meanwhile..it seems SRK is enjoying the break to get some much needed rest.. We will only know come December/ January if Salman managed to kill the two birds/khans with one shot...
Its amazing how Salman is getting away with not apologizing for the "like a raped woman" comment. No media trial for him?
Spoilt kid Salman has papa khan for the apologies
I don't expect anything from Sultan.. I will skip it until much later... The only film on my radar was Mahenjo Daro but I am disappointed by the trailer... waiting for Dear Zindagi and Raees... Also Bahubali the Conclusion.
150 crore for Salman Khan's Sultan in 5 days? Trade is positive
By Joginder Tuteja, Jul 4, 2016 - 08:38 IST
The biggest release of 2016, Sultan, is finally here. Great hype, terrific buzz, dream starcast [Salman Khan, Anushka Sharma], picture perfect mounting [Yash Raj Films], interesting concept [Ali Abbas Zafar], catchy music [Vishal-Shekhar, Irshad Kamil, Eid arrival [July 6], no competition from past or present, no challenge from Hollywood either, record number of screens [~5000] - just about everything is fitting in well for Sultan. Of course, eventually the entire package has to work as a whole as well than just the sum of parts. However, till then, one expects the five day extended weekend to do the talking.
Question in the trade is - Will Sultan do the unthinkable and record Rs. 150 crore before it enters weekdays? If the temperature on the surface is anything to go by, it could well hit that mark. In fact there is also an element of positivity that the film could scale much greater heights. However, taking one step at a time and going by a conservative scale, Rs. 150 crore pretty much seems plausible for now.
Says Girish Johar, distributor and film business analyst, "Sultan is a tsunami waiting to hit the Box Office; I can already feel it. The lull before the storm is already there now, what with the present days seeing the lowest turnover in the recent days. Yes, the film will definitely have one of the 'top openings of all times'. As a matter of fact, I personally wish that it does a half century in one day."
Now while that would be some height to scale, no one is contesting the fact that the film is set for nothing less than Rs. 120 crore and well placed to hit the Rs. 150 crore mark between Wednesday and Friday.
"It is likely to cross Rs. 130 crore as everything is in its favor, be it the release date, stars, look and even the music. I would not be surprised if it crosses Rs. 140 crore," says distributor Ramesh Sippy.
If that happens, the lifetime total of Bollywood's biggest grosser of 2016, Airlift [Rs. 129 crore], would be crossed in 5 days flat - something that would only spell great news for the Box Office which is reeling with quite a few under-performers this year.
Agrees trade expert Atul Mohan, "There has been no new film in last so many months that has done bumper business. Even Airlift was 6 months back and other than that only Housefull 3 crossed Ra. 100 crore. This means for audiences as well as exhibitors, the wait has been way too long for a biggie to arrive. Everyone is banking on Sultan and wants to earn from it. Expect theaters to run back to back shows right through the day for the Salman Khan starrer."
In fact it has been a fortnight since a film did really well at the Box Office. The last film to do some sort of business was Udta Punjab, though that too started fizzling after the first four days. Ever since then, over a dozen films have released and all have turned out to be disasters galore.
"Exactly," Akshaye Rathi (exhibitor and distributor) acknowledges the fact, "The cinemas have no other significant film to play and almost all the shows across multiplexes as well as single screens shall be given to Sultan. This would virtually leave the film as the only option for movie-goers!"
This makes the situation much better for Salman Khan when compared to his last All Time Blockbuster Bajrangi Bhaijaan which arrived on Eid 2016. Back then, it had to face massive challenge from S.S. Rajamouli's Bahubali which was doing great guns too and eventually prevented it from going past the lifetime total of Bollywood's biggest grosser ever, P.K. [Rs. 340.8 crore]. The Kabir Khan directed film had to stop in its tracks at Rs. 321 crore mark though for Sultan, all gates are currently open to steam ahead.
No wonder, the buzz is on.
"With a five day weekend, collections can be in the range of Rs. 120 crore to Rs. 150 crore, if the content is good. It is the Eid period and a Salman Khan film is coming after a while. Moreover, promos are making the film looking further exciting," says distributor Rajesh Thadani. His thoughts are echoed by distributor and exhibitor Harsh Jain, "Sultan is coming on Eid itself, which is a big plus. Looking at the craze around the film, the opening day itself can be more than Rs. 40 crore. Going ahead, the weekend would be somewhere around Rs. 130 crore. Beyond that it all depends on the merit of the film."
It would be a record for Salman Khan as well. Last year, his Bajrangi Bhaijaan had brought in Rs. 102.6 crore over the weekend while Prem Ratan Dhan Payo had seen his biggest ever opening day [Rs. 40.35 crore]. However, the biggest milestone for him was the four day weekend of the Sooraj Barjatya film that had seen Rs. 129.77 crore coming in. Now given the fact that Sultan has an additional day available for it due to five day weekend, it seems quite possible that Rs. 150 crore is a milestone waiting to be crossed.
"Yes, you can do the maths," says Girish, "On an average, Sultan - if accepted by the audiences - will have a five day run clocking Rs. 150 crore at the Box Office. Come on, a Salman film - especially on Eid - is not just a film, it's a 'ritual' now. 'Eidi with Bhai' is a mandate for all fans - be it any religion, caste or creed."
"Also, it has been a while since Salman did an out and out massy film," continues Atul, "Prem Ratan Dhan Payo had him in a sophisticated part and even in Bajrangi Bhaijaan there were no quintessential Salman Khan antics. The last time he pleased the masses in a major way was Kick. Still, he hasn't removed his shirt for long (laughs). Now he is compensating for that by removing his pants too. I can imagine audiences roaring once that happens. Rs. 130 crore would be very comfortably crossed by Sultan in its first five days and I won't be surprised if Rs. 150 crore is surpassed too, provided Ali Abbas Zafar's content works big time."
This is exactly what is keeping everyone super excited as the countdown begins for the film which is the first major on-screen story being told with wrestling at the center-stage.
"Considering the multiple factors such as the Eid advantage, popular music, Salman Khan's massive popularity among the masses and the extended weekend, I wouldn't be surprised if Sultan crosses Rs. 40 crore on Wednesday itself! If the film's content lives up to the massive hype around it, the film could easily set new benchmarks for the business and even notch up as much as Rs. 140-150 crore in the extended weekend," Akshaye continues to be mighty positive about the film.
With such major expectations around the film, how does the man at the hot seat - director Ali Abbas Zafar - feel? After all, the hype here is way beyond what his first two directorial outings, Mere Brother Ki Dulhan and Gunday (both successful affairs) had garnered.
"Definitely, there is a lot of hype," Ali says with a smile, "That said, at the end of it all, the film has to stand on its own feet. If it gets appreciated and loved then automatically it would create those big numbers that you speak about. Look at Bajrangi Bhaijaan; it got all the love and went on to do such great business. Same with PK as well. After all, business is directly proportionate to all the love that audiences give to a film."
True that, and here is to some fireworks at the Box Office later this week and beyond!
Early trends suggest (up until 6PM), there are high chances of the film crossing the 40-41 crore mark on Day 1 (Wednesday), which would be a massive achievement considering the fact that today is a partial holiday. The first day business would then be comparable to the first day business of a film like Dhoom 3, which was a made on a much higher budget and the biggest franchise film.
This is too much. Around 40 cr opening on a partial holiday. I just checked the public reaction after coming out of the theaters, the craze is unbelievable. Tomorrow it will probably earn around 45 cr. All records seem to be in danger.
Sultan is flirting with an all time record on day one. The picture looked pretty clear in the morning with a record looking almost certain on the advance and morning collections. It was looking ro race past the 39 crore nett plus of Prem Ratan Dhan Payo but though it is a national holiday, Eid is eventually going to be tomorrow which has meant a Pre - Eid trend for the film in Muslim centres.
These centres started bumper as the Salman Khan fans came first day first show but the 3pm and 6pm shows were lower being the final day of Ramazan. If it was not for this the film would have set crazy records but this will bring it down more towards the 40 crore nett range. Its going to be a very tight call with the first day of Prem Ratan Dhan Payo, it could beat but also short a little due to the muslin centres in Gujarat, Nizam, CP Berar, UP etc.
An all time record would be just extraordinary but even if it falls it a little short it will phenomenal considering pre Eid. East Punjab which is not really affected by Pre Eid is an all time record by 10-15%, West Bengal also looks a record while other circuits are a close call and it will come down to what figure comes in Mumbai as Prem Ratan Dhan Payo was an extraordinary 14.75 crore nett and that is not easy to beat.
HISTORIC - Sultan Tops 200 Crore Smashes Worldwide Record

Sultan created history by becoming the first film to cross 200 crore in Worldwide business in the first weekend as the film grossed 148 crore (Gross) in India and $8.60 million Overseas (58 crore). This gave it a three day Worldwide gross total of 206 crore. Below are the top five Wordwide opening three day weekends.
The figures are outstanding across the world. The final worldwide total will go a little higher as the Gulf business like for like is normally four days for other films while three here as normally UAE opens a day early while other nations in Gulf open on Friday. The Overseas total will go higher due to this and it is the second highest opening ever in Oversaes after Dhoom 3.
The industry and media still see 100 crore lifetime domestic totals as achievements for many films when they are not but this is a true benchmark that the film has gone through to become the first film to cross 200 crore Worldwide in just 3 days.
I want to see those people who were expecting this masala/entertaining genre to die. This genre is not only maintaining it popularity but getting more stronger. Main reason salman Amir recent success is pure desi Hindi movie, desi language, desi outfit, and most important Desi shooting location. Not only in India even overseas audiences also like to watch pure Hindi movie. This is reason why gajini, 3 idiots, Bajrangi bhaijan pk, BM, sultan tanu weds manu, scored heavily on box office. Srk has done only few movies in past 10 years like cdi, oso, rbdj, ce and coincidently all these movies worked well at BO.
After Saturday's collection (which might be the highest ever at ~40 cr) it seems Sultan is almost certain to be the highest grosser ever in domestic box office. I don't think it will cross PK in overseas markets. With the free run it has, it may even get to 400 crore net in India. Historic collection. I haven't seen the film but the wom is definitely positive. The thing with Salman's movies is that people don't expect quality from him, so even if they are just above average (7/10) they get excellent wom. Easily the biggest star atm and no one is even close. It's amazing how his career took a positive turn after Wanted and then Dabang. He was delivering flops after flops for years before that.
Phenomenal collections - beyond day 3 it definitely is the movie speaking, it cannot all be the Salman Khan factor. Once again, a well made film has been accepted by the audience. Now if some have concerns about the audience's IQ levels, they may need to rethink.
Movie may be really a good watch according to reviews. But the story is absolutely lunatic according to what I read.
Spoilers A female who is training for years with such dedication for her dream give up it for a man. LOL Terrific. Then the man who wants to woo the female , choose wrestling because she is a wrestler, then became an Olympic champ in few months. I wonder who write such stories, my guess is,only in Bollywood.
Looks like this movie is going the gadar way. Salman khan has become like rajnikant. There is no stopping him. Whatever film salman signs becomes blockbuster success. Amazing. He just knows what the audience wants from him and signs the right project. He has yet to fail. Just like when a rajnikant film opens, there is cult following to make the film open big and salman has found that cult following in India and will continue to deliver for a long time. His age won't matter like it does not with rajnikant.
Sultan Among Top Ten Worldwide Grossers In Just Five Days

Sultan is among top ten Worldwide grossers in just five days. The five day business is so huge of the film that it is comparable to the lifetime figures of other films. Below are the top ten all time Worldwide grossers.
The other day, I was reminiscing the BO records created by Amitabh Bachchan's films in the 1970s and 1980s. I distinctly recall, the film industry was dumbstruck as record after record was shattered, with Sr Bachchan's movies creating theatre, city and circuit records on Day 1, Day 3 and Week 1. The late Manmohan Desai -- who delivered a string of hits with Big B then -- described the Bachchan phenomenon aptly, when I interviewed him in 1981 [the very first interview of my career, in fact]: "Amit [Amitabh] is like Halley's Comet that strikes once in 70 years."
Similarly, Salman Khan is at the pinnacle of his career and it won't be erroneous to state that he's now ensconced on the throne that was once occupied by Bachchan Sr. With great power comes great responsibility, they say... Salman is well aware that he's the darling of the masses and is concentrating on movies that have something extra to offer than the usual masala. At the same time, he's ensuring that his legion of fans aren't disappointed. The last decade has been of utmost significant in Salman's career, since the actor has delivered a string of All Time Blockbusters [post DABANGG]. He is the Hit Machine. The Superstar. The Sultan of BO. The Pied Piper of Bollywood.
The BO performance of his new film SULTAN clearly indicates that 'Salmania' has gripped the nation. The 5-day business [Wednesday to Sunday] of his latest film reiterates the fact that there's no star bigger than Salman today. That's a fact, whether you like it or not.
Now let's analyse the reasons why SULTAN worked tremendously well at the ticket windows. The hysteria that this film generated prior to its release can easily be attributed to Salman's superstardom. The advance booking at plexes as well as single screens was terrific and the film, expectedly, opened to a mind boggling response on Wednesday [6 July]. Also, timing the release during the festive occasion of Eid meant SULTAN would reap a harvest at the BO initially. However, if the content matches the hype, it works as an icing on the cake and that's a key reason why SULTAN is having a dream run in the domestic as well as international markets. The audience feedback is fantastic and YRF is laughing all the way to the bank.
The 5-day weekend concluded yesterday [Sunday] and it will be interesting to see how SULTAN fares on weekdays -- from Monday to Thursday. As things stand today, Salman has two films in Rs 200 cr Club [KICK and PREM RATAN DHAN PAAYO] and one in Rs 300 cr Club [BAJRANGI BHAIJAAN]. SULTAN will easily cross Rs 200 cr mark in days to come, but will it cruise past Rs 300 cr mark? Most importantly, will it surpass the business of BAJRANGI BHAIJAAN and emerge Salman's biggest hit? It's a wait and watch situation right now!
Salman's crappy movie choices over the years is actually paying off for him. He delivered awful movies for half a decade and a lot of them we re flops. Then he tapped into the "South remake, south style action movies" and people started loving it. But it was still all style over substance.
And now he is starting to really cash in on that image of his - movies with even a little bit of story and heart are being hailed as classics because people were just not expecting this off Salman. Intentional or not, it is quite brilliant !!
I guess there are simply no haters existing for SK and AK, and their every movie with weak plot line but with little heart simply sustains even for Week 3 and week 4. if we take HNY as example, it has better music, entertaining plot line, two open weeks with holiday weekend - but film simple didn't sustain from Monday
Is this because of SRK haters who tries to bring him down (or) he is over promoting himself??????
