Shah Rukh Khan will be playing a bootlegger in Rahul Dholakia’s film Raees that goes on the floors next September. The period crime drama has Farhan Akhtar essay a police inspector.
Says Dholakia, “The film is set in the 1980s and loosely based on real-life incidents.”
About whether Farhan’s character is based on a real-life cop from Mumbai he says, “I have taken elements from here and there to add to his character from a cop who has passed away.”
As the film is a period action crime drama, Dholakia has begun working on the look and styling. He informs, “There are a lot of people in mind, but I still haven’t confirmed anyone. There is still a lot of time to finalise the crew.”
Dholakia intends to shoot the entire film in Gujarat. He informs, “I plan to shoot the film extensively in old Ahmedabad and some parts of Saurashtra as I have spent a lot of time there.”
When asked if Shah Rukh’s character has grey shades, Dholakia jokingly said, “50 shades.”
And why is the film titled Raees?
Dholakia informs, “Farhan is a large-hearted cop. In fact both the characters are dil ke Raees.”
So doesn't look like Raees will release on Eid 2015 judging by Ritesh's tweets of no clash and this Kabir Khan tweet. Salman must think he owns Eid for himself. They should release Raees earlier post IPL now.
Kabir Khan @kabirkhankk 28 De @a_for_Aakib @aadeezrockz EID 2015...
The director should zip it from now on and let the film start first. Simply as people will jump into conclusion and stupid disappointments from almost every single detail as if they read the script themselves.

We already told you that Shah Rukh Khan’s next with Rahul Dholakia will see the actor in the role of a gangster. Now we hear that SRK will be playing a criminal who starts the alcohol trade in Gujarat. The look, the feel and the story of the film is said to be similar to the hit American TV show, Boardwalk Empire.
Hollywood make-up artists for SRK in Raees Mehul S Thakkar,Mumbai Mirror | Jan 21, 2014, 12.00 AM IST
Trust team Excel to go the extra mile for their film. In Don 2, Farhan had personally designed the gun that Shah Rukh Khan carries to give depth to the character. And now for Raees, in which the actor is reportedly playing a Gujarati don, a team of Hollywood make-up artistes will try out different looks for him. The final call will be SRK's.
A source close to the development told Mirror that SRK is really excited about the project and will sit down soon to work on the detailing.
"Meanwhile the makers are doing their homework so that they can present him with some look tests," says the source. Rahul Dholakia, the film's director, has already travelled to the US once for a round of discussions with one of Hollywood's top make-up team.
"They will try out not just different hair styles, but also experiment with eyebrows, beards and scars. The scar will be retained only if it works for the character. There will be no prosthetics, the look will be realistic. The team will be finalised soon and will arrive in a few months time to work with SRK."
The film is set in Gujarat and reportedly revolves around two warring gangs. Buzz is that SRK is playing a bootlegger while Farhan Akhtar portrays a cop.
^ I say pre-production, because they can plan everything out in advance and just execute during the production & post production. if the pre-production is bad than the film could look like a rush product. Also during pre-production they need to make sure production unit is all on the same page.
Has SRK Already Booked Eid 2015 slot for "Raees"? Feb18, 2014
While all eyes were set on who grabs the Eid release in 2015, Shah Rukh Khan seems to have claimed this prime slot for his next. Having delivered a massive hit like Chennai Express last year, SRK is all set to reclaim this festive period.
Raees, starring the King Khan is a directorial venture of Rahul Dholakia (of Parzania Fame). The movie is all set to go on floors later this year once SRK wraps up work on Happy New Year. The team of the film is eyeing to release it amidst Eid festivities in 2015. Confirming this news, co-producer Ritesh Sidhwani informed a popular daily about the film being prepped as a Eid 2015 release. Though Ritesh had denied it earlier in December, Bollywood insiders insist a certain turn of events which has led hem to believe Raees might be slated for 2015 Eid. The film also stars Farhan Akhtar and Sonam Kapoor along side SRK.
This festive period has in the past been a stronghold of Salman Khan, with major hits such as Wanted (2006), Bodyguard (2011), Dabangg (2010) all been customary Eid releases. Though Slman has booked his usual Eid spot in 2014 for his upcoming film Kick, it is highly probable that next year it will belong to SRK.
Looks like, Eid 2015 will be sparking some interesting fireworks!
I don't know if Raees will make it to 2015, or will Farhan be replaced by someone else. I just read an interview on Bollywood Hungama that his next films are Zoya Akhtar's next starts shooting in May and then Vinod Chopra's next.
