Happy New Year has taken a bumper opening all over with collections around the 75-80% mark on average which is better than all the films released this year by a distance. The opening is universal across the board. The biggest holiday of the year gives the film that extra boost especially at the single screens. The Shahrukh Khan - Deepika Padukone pairing has now seen a record or near record opening everytime they have been paired together.
The opening is extraordinary all over though Mumbai city can be called to be an out performer as it is rare to see shows at around 8.00am to be house full or near house full in multiplexes of Mumbai city. The city normally sees lower opening occupancies than cities like Delhi or Ahmedabad as it has a huge number of screenings.
The release in terms of screens is the widest ever but in terms of shows it is possibly less than Kick due to the long runtime of the film. The film is around 30 minutes longer than Kick which means Kick was getting six shows per screen at some multiplexes while that would be impossible with Happy New Year unless with it is very odd timings. Happy New Year is on course to break records and with another holiday tomorrow and then Sunday to follow it not only gives it a big chance of a first day record but also a weekend record.

Kolkata, Mumbai, Delhi, Bangalore, Pune, Hyderabad have a mind blowing opening. The early morning shows were almost housefull in multiplexes of metros. Having a screen count of 4800+ screens in Hindi only, there is no doubt this Farah Khan directorial will exceed collection records by leaps and bounds.

After the previous week's non starters, all eyes have been on the next release HAPPY NEW YEAR. The Farah Khan directed multi starrer featuring Deepika Padukone, Shah Rukh Khan, Abhishek Bachchan, Boman Irani, Sonu Sood and Vivaan Shah has been one of the most talked about and anticipated films of recent times.
As expected, HAPPY NEW YEAR (HNY) has opened on a high note with occupancy rates across the country hovering close to 90%. In fact the film has high chances of posting record breaking opening day figures. Interestingly, the film's advance bookings too were met with phenomenal response. This coupled with the massive opening hints at an exceptional weekend with gigantic numbers on the cards. Besides, being a solo release with most of the previous releases already off screens, HNY has a clear week to post massive collections.
Overall with evening and night shows expecting to go houseful, all that remains is to see when and how does the film manage to break previously established collection records.
Happy New Year has taken the best opening of the year by a distance in the morning shows and if this pace holds which it should as it is a big holiday it will be an all time record. The other films releases this year did not hold the same pace for some reason or the other apart from Ek Villain and 2 States.
Kick was hit by pre eid so although the opening was so strong it was uneven and the muslim centres slowed rapidly after first show at single screens. Bang Bang took a 70% start at multiplexes but was held back by single screens and slowed in the evening at many places. At the time it looked like it was due to Navratra's and Puja's but in hindsight it was obviously word of mouth kicking in. The other films that opened well were Ek Villain, Two States and Jai Ho with the first two being smaller releases and Jai Ho having better occupancies at multiplexes in the morning on lower rates but not really consolidating.
The average occupancies in the morning shows of releases this year are as follows.
1. Happy New Year 75-80% 2. Kick 60-65% 3. Bang Bang 60-65% 4. Ek Villain 60-65% 5. Jai Ho 55-60% 5. 2 States 55-60%
Happy New Year 1st Day Collection Early Trends, Earth Shattering in Noon shows.
Happy New Year movie is just housefull everywhere as early trends for first day (Friday) noon shows are coming in. Film is just earth shattering everywhere with 95%+ occupancy recording all across India. Be it big cities or interiors film is just Sold Out in Noon shows as samples are received. This is extremely good news for HNY and film is on its way to make history today at box office.
Happy New Year opened to 75-80% in Morning shows which is just excellent considering film released in huge scale. After that film has picked up to 95-100% occupancy in Noon shows which is historic considering film released in over 4000 screens in India. Delhi, Gurgaon, Pune, Lucknow, Hyderabad, Kanpur everywhere film is recording 95-100% occupancy which is just like ideal case. Even Mumbai which started in epic proportion in Morning shows, holding well in noon time with 85-90% recording as per latest.
Coming to first day collection if film now holds well in Evening and Night time, then all time opening records are in danger.
Happy New Year has taken the best opening for a film released in 2014. The occupancy for the morning shows was better than other big openers like Singham Returns, Kick and Bang Bang. Happy New Year was also about 10-15% better than the second best opening this year.
The average all-India occupancy was around 80%, which is fantastic considering the fact that some shows opened very early in the morning. Due to the length of the film, shows started a little earlier than usual at some centres.
Amongst all the big films released this year, the opening of Kick was on par with trade expectations, Bang Bang and Jai Ho were below-the-mark and films like Singham Returns and Ek Villain did better than expected. Happy New Year falls in the Kick category, as the expectations were already very high which the film has live up to.
After a bumper opening, films like Bang Bang and Kick dipped due to Pre-Eid and Navratri period, but the decision to release Happy New Year a day after Diwali holiday seems to have worked. The film has held strongly in the noon, with all-India occupancy crossing 85%. It could go higher later in the day as the reports from theatres is very positive.
Happy New Year should record the highest opening day collections and could cross the 40 cr mark for the first time ever. The Tamil and Telugu versions have also opened very well, which will only add to the domestic (India) collections.

Shah Rukh Khan's 'Happy New Year' set to create records, might rake in over Rs 40 crore on first day
Friday, 24 October 2014 - 5:47pm IST | Place: Mumbai | Agency: DNA Webdesk DNA Web Team
Shah Rukh Khan's biggest release this year is definitely Happy New Year. The film which released on Friday has recorded maximum occupancies in the morning and afternoon shows and is expected to put a great show in its evening shows as well. All in all, Happy New Year has released over 5000 screens all over India, which makes it one of the biggest films in Bollywood.
The film has the entertainment value intact and is a nice watch this Diwali. Given it is a solo release this week, Happy New Year will cash in on the occasion and is expected to create newer records this year.
Aamir Khan had an earth shattering opening day with Dhoom 3 last year but trade verdicts report that the Farah Khan directorial starring SRK, Deepika Padukone, Abhishek Bachchan, Boman Irani, Sonu Sood and Vivaan Shah in lead roles might just rake in over Rs 40 crores on its opening day, which in itself will be a record!
The advance bookings recorded were the highest for any film till date and with shows running housefull, the film is definitely having a bombastic start. If the film's content is loved by the audience, the film might as well end up raking in even more moolah since it has a clean run of two weeks before Akshay Kumar-Lisa Haydon starrer The Shaukeens hit the screens!
