Box Office: Dangal beats Dhoom 3 and P.K; emerges as the All Time Highest Opening Weekend grosser at the North America box office
By Bollywood Hungama News Network , Dec 27, 2016 - 10:16 hrs IST -
The overseas markets have always been a cash cow for Bollywood films especially the ones features the big Khans of the industry viz. Salman Khan, Shah Rukh Khan and Aamir Khan. However over the years the overseas markets have opened up to films that also feature other actors that have eventually gone on to do well in these markets. The recently released Aamir Khan starrer Dangal is no different in this regard. In fact the films that released across 1000 screens in the overseas market, has been doing brisk business. In this special report we take a look at the Opening Weekend collections of Dangal in the overseas territory of North America while comparing the same to previously release Bollywood films in the same territory. Interestingly Dangal that has collected 3.90 mil. USD has emerged as the All Time Highest Opening Weekend grosser at the North America box office.
List of All Time Highest Opening Weekend grossers at the North America box office
Dangal had a rock solid Tuesday as the film crossed 150 crore nett in five days. The collections on Tuesday are set to be in the 22-22.50 crore nett region which is a drop of 10% from Monday The total collections are in the 151.50 crore nett region. The collections are steady all over with North India continiung its phenomenal run. the way the film is going in Delhi / UP and East Punjab its looking certain that these two circuits will be record breaking and record the highest lifetime collections ever. The first tax exemption of the film came through on Tuesday as centres in Haryana went tax free which will ensure strong hold going forward in Haryana. There will be other states that will follow and crucially UP could be tax free soon and this state has very high entertainment tax.
The Tuesday collections will be an ALL TIME RECORD for the first Tuesday if they come out as per the early estimates as the non holiday record is Bajrangi Bhaijaan which was a little under 21 crore nett and even on a worse case scenario if some circuits come in lower than present estimates it should cross the Bajrangi Bhaijaan Tuesday number. No other film outside Bajrangi Bhaijaan on a non holiday has ever collected over 20 crore nett on its first Tuesday and Dangal will be the second.
The collections of the Tamil and Telugu versions will be at around 3.75 crore nett in five days and have not done well though the Tamil version is steady. M.S. Dhoni - The Untold Story had grossed 6.50 crore nett in its run which was mainly because Dhoni played for Chennai Express in the IPL and their was some brand value.

Even though I still think Aamir khan is limited in his acting range .. Not all his movies are great but Credit where due.
1. He selects scripts that he believes in and takes his time making the movies. 2. He created the image of perfectionist with his varied movies, television show and different presentation though the media. He mixes up scripts well (Except the intolerance comment .. But here He only messed up SRK as his movie was to come a year after). 3. He has presented the concept that he works hardest at his movies through repeated body manipulation to perform his roles. manipulating the appearance also gives the impression of an exceptional performance as the roles appear different on screen. His decent acting (Often serious looking) + Body changes for the role have created huge fan following and impact. 4. He does not oversell the product with in your face marketing (He does have his own way of selling..)
All in all Aamir has managed his limitations of Body size and range of acting very well.. Packaged his products and image well and achieved immense success and respect. Lessons to learn from him for lot of people.

Watched Dangal. It's a very good movie. Particularly the first half. That's because all sports based movies have a predictable second half. Same with Dangal, the first half is excellent. It's funny and emotional at the same time. However, you feel a deja vu through out the movie, particularly the second half and the climax reminds a lot of CDI. Aamir and the girls have done a great job. Aamir's hardwork shows up in his physical appearance in the 3 different stages of life. It's definitely way better than Sultan as far as the detailing of the sport and overall performances are concerned. Overall a "very good" movie if you see it in isolation but it's nothing more than a sequel to CDI if you compare.
See that is what happens when a movie gets universal acclaim a lot more people tend to see it like we all in this forum are SRK fans but hearing good things about a movie we don't want to miss out on a good cinematic experience. When 8 out of 10 in your circle of friends have seen a movie and praising it you tend to see it on big stage. Even as reluctant as i am to see Dangal in Theater i will end up seeing it getting the push from my family and friends
Box Office: Dangal is now the 2nd highest grosser of 2016, next target is Sultan
By Bollywood Hungama News Network, Dec 28, 2016 - 12:05 hrs IST
The Nitesh Tiwari directed biopic Dangal starring Aamir Khan has set the box office register jingling since its release. In fact the film that released across 4300 screens in India managed to enter the Rs. 100 Crore Club in just three days, and has now breached the Rs. 150 cr mark in five days.
In this box office report we take a look at the box office collections of Dangal while comparing them to previous releases of 2016. Collecting Rs. 155.53 cr in five days, Dangal has now emerged as the second highest grosser of 2016. Though the film is still far off from overtaking the collections of the Salman Khan starrer Sultan that had collected Rs. 300.45 cr, Dangal does manage to surpass other releases like M. S. Dhoni – The Untold Story that collected Rs. 133.04 cr, Airlift that collected Rs. 128.1 cr, Rustom that collected Rs. 127.49 cr, Ae Dil Hai Mushkil that collected Rs. 112.45 cr, Housefull 3 that collected Rs. 109.14 cr, Shivaay that collected Rs. 100.3 cr and even Fan that collected Rs. 84.1 cr.
However, with no new Bollywood releases in sight, Dangal looks set to enjoy an extended run in theatres unopposed. Coupled with this, the fact that Dangal is being declared tax free in certain territories will definitely boost the final overall box office collections of the film.
For the first time, I am seeing Bollywood trolls, where SRK is not at receiving end.
That's because he is not in the picture - he is no longer first amongst equals at least going by his lack of a 200 crore grosser in the last 3 years
For a Change it is good to see Amir fans taking a dig at Salman fans otherwise till last decade or even till last couple of years it took the combined power of both Amir(Acting and meaningful Cinema) and Salman(Star Power) to take on SRK fans.
Box Office: Dangal collects 21.20 cr. on Day 6, is amongst Top-5 All Time Biggest Week One in just 6 days!
By Joginder Tuteja, Dec 29, 2016 - 12:09 hrs IST
It is now pretty much a norm that practically every day, a new record would be set by Dangal. This is what has happened post Wednesday too, what with the film collecting Rs. 21.20 crore more. With this, the collections now stand at 176.98 crore and in the process, the Aamir Khan starrer has now gone past the entire Week One collections of several biggies like:
Prem Ratan Dhan Payo – Rs. 165.45 crore
Kick – Rs. 164.21 crore
Happy New Year – Rs. 152 crore
Chennai Express – Rs. 149.96 crore
Ek Tha Tiger – Rs. 137.15 crore
The film is now competing with the best of the best and by tonight, it would be the second biggest accumulator ever when it comes to first week collections:
Sultan – Rs. 208.82 crore
Dhoom 3 – Rs. 188 crore
Bajrangi Bhaijaan – Rs. 184.62 crore
PK – Rs. 183 crore
Dangal – Rs. 176.98 crore
The film that would stay at the top is Sultan and the Salman Khan starrer was buoyed big time by the Eid holiday. In case of Dangal there is no holiday and that makes it all the more remarkable that the Week One collections would be around the Rs. 195 crore mark.
Director Nitesh Tiwari has delivered an All Time Blockbuster with Aamir Khan and that’s a good reason to rejoice as one gears up for another eventful weekend ahead.

First half of movie was almost perfect but in second half,.some things irked me so much and too mich done just for sake of drama and to make Aamirs character look better. But i can see why its doing so well in India as the movie has many great scenes and brilliant acting..as well as being thoroughly entertainjng.
I definitely prefer Chak De though and not just cause of SRK, it was just a better movie. Everyone i went with liked ir but agreed CD us better.
Box Office: Dangal enters 200 Crore Club, goes past Prem Ratan Dhan Payo, Happy New Year, 3 Idiots, Ek Tha Tiger lifetime in 8 days
By Joginder Tuteja, Dec 31, 2016 - 8:09 hrs IST
Dangal had another good day in office as it continued to collect on the second Friday as well. Typically, a film falls between Thursday and Friday due to arrival of a new biggie. However, there was no such threat for the Aamir Khan starrer since it is practically the only film in contention. There was no new Hindi release yesterday and hence there was no reduction in count of shows either. Moreover, audience interest is continuing to be on high, as a result of which Rs. 18.59 crore more came in.
The film has now collected Rs. 216.13 crore and in the process entered the 200 crore Club. There have been only 9 films before Dangal that have managed to go past the 200 crore mark and the Nitesh Tiwari directed affair has already gone past three of these – 3 Idiots, Happy New Year, Prem Ratan Dhan Payo – which feature Aamir Khan, Shahrukh Khan and Salman Khan respectively.
PK – Rs. 340.8 crore
Bajrangi Bhaijaan – Rs. 321 crore
Sultan – Rs. 301.5 crore
Dhoom 3 – Rs. 284 crore
Kick – Rs. 232 crore
Chennai Express – Rs. 227 crore
Dangal – Rs. 216.13 crore
Prem Ratan Dhan Payo – Rs. 210 crore
Happy New Year – Rs. 205 crore
3 Idiots – Rs. 202.5 crore
Ek Tha Tiger – Rs. 199 crore
Today, the film will go past Shahrukh Khan’s Chennai Express as well and Salman Khan’s Kick as well. That would bring it at Number 5 position of the All Time Biggest grossers. While all these records would be tumbled in a jiffy, it would be a while before Dhoom 3 would be a story of the past. It would be interesting to see how fast does Aamir Khan manage to beat his own film because post that it would be time to enter the top league and aim for the 300 crore club.
Wow this is trending way better than what I expected. It is even trending better than 3idiots so far. I clearly underestimated its entertainment value. At this rate this should cross 300 cr by the end of week 2. If that happens then crossing PK is only a matter of time.
Box Office: Aamir Khan’s Dangal collects 20.29 cr. on Day 6, heads for All Time blockbuster status
By Joginder Tuteja, Dec 30, 2016 - 12:05 hrs IST
Dangal has done it. Continuing with its superb run right through the first week, the film collected Rs. 20.29 crore more on Thursday. With this, the film has now accumulated Rs. 197.54 crore, hence pretty much establishing the fact that a film can cover a huge distance like this even without a festival holiday during weekdays to support its cause. In fact now looks forward to 2017 with a good hope that a first week of Rs. 200 crore would be a definite possibility for at least 2-3 major films.
The Aamir Khan starrer is now heading for an All Time Blockbuster status. In the current times, ever since the Rs. 100/200/300 Crore Clubs were formed, there have only been six films (as below) which have enjoyed this status:
Aamir Khan and Salman Khan are tied at 3 All Time Blockbusters each, and former would soon be taking a lead with Dangal joining the list as well. Of course Salman Khan has an opportunity to go two-up in 2017 with the release of Tubelight and Tiger Zinda Hai. However, while that happens, it would happen. Till then, Aamir is set to close the year on a supreme high and now one waits to see the kind of moolah that the film generates in the coming weekend.
Director Nitesh Tiwari has now entered the big league and one waits to see what he picks up next.
Dangal has emerged the biggest hit of the year after its second Saturday business. The film was always likely to cross the NETT figures of Sultan after its huge Friday but the Saturday business confirms the share of Sultan will be crossed unless there is some big downturn in week three. Dangal had a share of 104 crore apprx in the first week and by the end of week two it is looking to be close to 150 crore and Sultan was 158 crore and that 8 crore should easily be covered after week two. The second Saturday collections look to be in the 23 crore nett range which takes the second weekend to 41 crore nett.
Dangal has a nine day total of 233 crore nett plus and by the end of the weekend it will be in a similar range to Dhoom 3 (261 cr) which is the fourth highest grossing Hindi film of all time. The second Saturday is also a record easily beating the 19 crore nett second Saturday record of Bajrangi Bhaijaan and by quite a margin. The growth on Saturday will be around 25-30% which is huge at the levels the film is collecting. the second weekend is a certain all time record which is held by Bajrangi Bhaijaan at 55.5 crore nett. The film is tax free in three states at the moment and there are a couple more waiting. Delhi city and Maharashtra going tax free would boost the NETT collections further but it remains to be seen if they do get the exemption.
Dangal is closing on in on the 500 crore mark Worldwide with its business reaching 495 crore after ten days. the film has grossed 353.50 crore in India (262.71 crore nett) and around 140 crore in Overseas. The film still has plenty of legs so should comfortably cross 600 crore Worldwide though the PK total looks difficult unless there is a Far East release down the line and it manages to get numbers there. The film has performed better in India than Overseas as its the best time of the year in Overseas markets and the film is not going to add much to last years Dilwale which despite its numbers in Overseas was not really appreciated but down to the period. There is the Pakistan factor where Dangal has not been released but even if we add $2 million for that it will just edge Dilwale by around 5%. That too if it sustains well after the holiday period. That is not to say its not done well Overseas but it could have been better. Australia and US / Canada will be records but other markets are less. Below are the top ten all time Worldwide grossers.
Box Office: Dangal creates HISTORY, enters 300 Crore Club in less than two weeks
By Joginder Tuteja, Jan 5, 2017 - 8:00 hrs IST
Dangal has done something that no other Bollywood film has ever done before. The film has managed to enter the Rs. 300 Crore Club well inside a fortnight. The feat has been accomplished on the 13th day itself, what with Rs. 9.23 crore more coming in. With this, the film’s collections now read Rs. 304.38 crore. Now that’s unprecedented as no other film has ever crossed the Rs. 300 crore mark in such quick time. However, Dangal has done that and with this it has gathered yet another record to its name.
For Aamir Khan, this is now his second back to back triple century. He scored one a couple of years back with PK which went on to accumulate Rs. 340.8 crore in its lifetime run. While that number should be crossed within three weeks itself by Dangal, one waits to see further records that are added to the film’s name in days to come.
So far in Bollywood only four films have managed to enter the Rs. 300 Crore Club. Its proud entrants are:
Now that Dangal has managed to surpass Sultan lifetime as well in 13 days flat, it is also the biggest grosser of 2016 releases, hence justifying its standing as an All Time Blockbuster.
For director Nitesh Tiwari, this is a huge leap into the big league. Lifetime total of his earlier two films were Rs. 7 crore [Chillar Party, with Vikas Behl as the co-director] and Rs. 40 crore [Bhoothnath Returns]. To enjoy a score of Rs. 7, 40 and Rs. 304.64 crore* (and still counting) is stuff that dreams are made of and it would be quite a task for him too to take it to the next level for his film to come!
304 cr in 2 weeks ! 8D and still got another open week left before Ok Jaanu...
At this rate Aamir is competing with himself, and to think he was almost done and dusted in the early 00s, he took 4 years sabbatical came back. Since then he has been at the top of his game both critical and box office. That's a remarkable career turnaround.
Worldwide All Time - Dangal Fourth After Two Weeks
Friday 06 January 2016 11.30 IST
Box Office India Trade Network
Dangal (Hindi) hasgrossed 577 crore Worldwide in two weeks. In Overseas it has become the highest grossing film of the year with $24.50 million beating Sultan which grossed $24.17 million. In India the film has also surpassed the NETT business of Sultan which was 300.67 crore but the GROSS is lower as Sultan has a gross of 419 crore. In two weeks Dangal has grossed 412 crore in India (304 crore nett) and 165 crore ($24.50 million) in Overseas giving it a grand total of 577 crore. It will go ahead of both Sultan and Bajrangi Bhaijaan this weekend to become the second highest Worldwide grosser of all time. The film is unlikely to reach the Worldwide figure of PK unless there is a Far East release down the line and it scores in that release. The film though does have a chance to hit the 700 crore mark Worldwide but it will be tough. Below are the top ten all time Worldwide grossers.
