“Christmas is the right time for a festive film like Dilwale”
by Vajir Singh (March 21, 2015)
Mr Blockbuster Rohit Shetty started shooting his next mega-ambitious venture, Dilwale featuring Shah Rukh Khan, Kajol, Varun Dhawan and Kriti Sanon in the lead, yesterday. Here’s the director with the Midas touch in conversation with Vajir Singh
What was the first day of the shoot like?
As usual… normal. It is my 11th film and I am working with Varun (Dhawan) for the first time, so they (the entire unit) are very excited. They are asking me so many questions and you can see that energy in them. Also, I am working with Sanjay Mishra and Johnny bhai (Lever) again, after Golmaal 3. So it was a reunion of sorts for all the seniors and an adventure for the new guys, mainly Varun (Dhawan) and Varun Sharma. It was nice, just like it has always been for us for so many years. Varun (Dhawan) is known for his energy and so are you. Did you guys have any fun?
Varun is from the film fraternity and I feel that believing in this kind of cinema is the most important thing. He has tremendous energy and it is infectious, so you get charged up working with youngsters. They have so much energy and they are also very committed to their work. So it’s exciting to work with them.
What do you mean when by ‘this kind of cinema’?
I mean commercial cinema. When you are working in a hardcore commercial film, you must have faith in it, conviction, a belief that this is a world you are creating for the audience. There is a huge audience that loves films like these. That’s the cinema I am talking about.
This is the first time you have had such a long gap between your last release and going on the floors with your next film. Why was that?
No, we were ready. In mid-August last year, we released Singham Returns, and I was busy with my TV show, Khatron Ke Khiladi, in November and December. In January, when I came back, I needed two months for prep since I had been away for the TV show.
Let me ask a cliché… How different is this film compared to previous Rohit Shetty blockbusters?
(Laughs) Not different. It’s bigger and better and something I have not done earlier. I don’t want to use a cliché and say that this is ‘new’. My audience will enjoy it more than Chennai Express or any of the Singhams and Golmaals. That’s what we are aiming for, that’s what we will work for. Kids just love your films. What can they expect from this one?
Hmm…Kids! It has become a joke now. If you want to sound intelligent, you say, ‘We will not be blowing up Scorpios (car).’ I have an audience, I do all the car chases and I have the humour quotient and the action quotient. And, believe me, kids love it. That’s why, there is no bloodshed in my films, no vulgarity, and no double entendre because we have an audience that does not like that kind of cinema, they are not comfortable watching that kind of cinema with their families. So that’s why my main audience is kids and the family audience. There are lots of cars… we have modified lots of cars, just not for blowing up; we have got two to three companies to modify those cars so that the kids get even more excited to watch this. Why is the film titled Dilwale?
This film is not only about action or comedy; there is a strong love story in the film and obviously when you have Shah Rukh Khan and Kajol together, you need a strong love story. This is surrounded by all the other elements of a typical Rohit Shetty and his team film. You have known Kajol for a very long time but this is the first time you are directing her.
I think it will be a little awkward because I have worked with her as an assistant. We are like family since we have known each other for so long. For the first day, I think it will be a little awkward but I am also very excited because of the kind of character we have written… I am very excited to shoot and show people what we have done. What was it like when you approached her for the movie?
I was a little awkward and I told my writers to narrate the story to her while I was silent. When they finished, I spoke to her. I even told her I didn’t know why I was feeling awkward doing the film with her and that she was the last person about whom I should feel this way. Yet, I said, it was very awkward narrating a script to her and doing a film with her. But, I added, it was a dream come true. When you have actors like Shah Rukh Khan and Kajol and a producer like Red Chillies, what else could a director ask for? Why a Christmas release?
It’s a holiday film, it is a family film and I think it’s the right time for a film like Dilwale. It is a celebration, it’s a festive film. When the promo releases… it is too early to talk about the promos but when it does release, you will realise why it is a festive film. It is a film which the entire family would go and watch together, including kids. So I think Christmas is the right time for a film like this. You will be shooting overseas after a very long time.
My ADs are very happy! My whole team and my unit are very happy that we will all be going abroad for a long schedule, not a small one. For me, it is a requirement of the script and that’s why I am going.
Which countries you are planning to shoot in?
We are planning to shoot in Cape Town, Abu Dhabi and Mauritius but only after I complete the Goa schedule. There is a lot of action in this film and there are four big action sequences overseas. I want to do it in Cape Town because I am familiar with the team there due to the Fear Factor shoots. I have also shot Khatron Ke Khiladi there. So I am familiar with Cape Town. At present, everything is in the planning stage but we are likely to shoot in Cape Town.
Will we get to see a new kind of action from you this time?
I wouldn’t say ‘new’ because it sounds very clichéd and arrogant to say that I am going to present something new. But, yes, it will be a little different from what I have done earlier. That is what the script requires. That is the kind of styling this film requires. So I wouldn’t say the action is new but there will be some sequences I have not done earlier.
It is a big responsibility because you are bringing Kajol and Shah Rukh Khan back together on the big screen. How are you coping?
I am working hard; that’s all I can do. I will give 10,000 per cent and my whole team is charged up. They are working round the clock. They are working on the look, on the script and everything else because at the end of the day, after eight or nine blockbusters… I don’t know I have lost the count… I cannot take my audience for granted. I consider myself lucky to have Shah Rukh and Kajol in my film. So all I can do is work really hand and leave the rest to the audience.
4 Action scenes for Shah Rukh Khan's 'Dilwale' to be shot in Cape Town: Rohit Shetty
Rohit Shetty might have started shooting for his upcoming Christmas release Dilwale in Mumbai, but soon he's flying abroad. "Rohit and the Dilwale team will be camping in Cape Town for their next schedule", source close to the director confirmed. Like his other films, Dilwale too will have some hi-fi action scenes- four of which will be shot in Cape Town itself.
Rohit, in a recent interview also confirmed the development. "There is a lot of action in this film and there are four big action sequences overseas. I want to do it in Cape Town because I am familiar with the team there due to the Khatron Ke Khiladi shoots. So I am familiar with Cape Town. At present, everything is in the planning stage but we are likely to shoot in Cape Town".
Shah Rukh, in a previous interview with us had also informed that Dilwale will have some never-seen-before action sequences which is way beyond his own imagination. But the Cape Town schedule is not taking off immediately, the director said in the interview to boxofficeindia. "We are planning to shoot in Cape Town, Abu Dhabi and Mauritius but only after I complete the Goa schedule. My whole team and my unit are very happy that we will all be going abroad for a long schedule, not a small one. For me, it is a requirement of the script and that's why I am going", Rohit said.
www.boxofficeindia.co.in/dilwale/ The editor, according to this, is Bunty Negi. Such a random choice. Checked the past films he's worked on, they're average/bad and include Humshakals & Action Jackson. Hope it's not true.
Strange - has Rohit changed part of his team this time round as the rest of the folks seem to be the same as before. Steven Bernard has usually done the editing of his recent films, and done fairly well too.

Shah Rukh Khan creates a new record with Rohit Shetty's 'Dilwale'
Friday, 10 April 2015 - 7:03pm IST | Agency: dna webdesk
Trust Shah Rukh Khan to always do it differently. Time and again, SRK has come out as a winner when it comes to his marketing strategies and business deals. With Rohit Shetty's Dilwale, SRK has set another record. The music rights of the Rohit Shetty directorial has been reportedly sold at a whopping amount to Sony. Talking to a leading daily, Red Chillies officials confirmed the news without giving out the exact price.
We hear that Red Chillies Entertainment, SRK's production house which is producing Dilwale has already signed a deal with Sony and has sold the music rights for over Rs 19 crore - which is possibly the highest ever given for any Bollywood film. SRK, whose last few films have been huge money spinners at the box office had shattered all pre-existing records with his previous film with Rohit.
"Just finished Fan yesterday. My injury that happened during HNY is a little bad. So I have 15-20 days off. I do Raees for a couple of months now. In June yes [will start Dilwale] ...Rohit will make us do something which we haven't done. We've done some amazing love stories. We'll have the love story part of it. I think the story is very sweet and it it will be really nice to work with Kajol. Really looking forward to that."
Talking about FAN: "Very very hectic. It's an extremely physically difficult film. And we had thought we'd finish the film in about 55 days. It's taken us about 90. A lot of my films, even Raees has gotten delayed, even Dilwale has got postponed by a couple of months. But I wanted to complete it because it's very hectic, very different. Requires me to be there all the time...we have finished it. I have 5 days of reshoot which I'll do later"
Shah Rukh Khan to shoot water stunts for Dilwale in Mauritius'
Shah Rukh Khan and Kajol fans are in for a treat this year with the announcement of their upcoming film Dilwale but that's not the only eye catching factor about the film. Readers may be aware that the film is directed by Rohit Shetty and hence, action too will be an integral part of it.
While the director is famous for his 'flying cars' sequences and for being the judge of India's version of 'Fear Factor', 'Khatron Ke Khiladi', this time around, we will see some more unique stunts in Dilwale. From what we hear, these sequences will not be shot on the land, but on the sea in Mauritius. Long ago, Rohit Shetty had stated that they will be shooting in locations like Cape Town, Abu Dhabi and Mauritius after wrapping up their Goa schedule. Now, surely from what is being said, water action, being an unexplored concept in Bollywood, has raised the curiosity levels a few notches higher.
Dilwale, produced by Red Chillies Entertainment and Rohit Shetty Productions, also stars Varun Dhawan and Kriti Sanon in lead roles along with Vinod Khanna, Kabir Bedi, Johnny Lever, Varun Sharma, Boman Irani among others. It is slated to release on December 25, 2015.
Probably just BS considering Ranveer, PC, Deepika said it's releasing on 18th Dec. Even it releasing on the 18th would be bad for Dilwale.
Clash of the Box Office Titans
13 May, 2015
Sanjay Leela Bhansali doesn’t like to be challenged. The filmmaker is refusing to budge from the 25 December release date that he’s blocked for his Bajirao Mastani, although Shah Rukh Khan and his Chennai Express director Rohit Shetty have staked claim to the same date for their new film Dilwale. Industry insiders are saying it makes bad business sense for both banners to release their ‘biggies’ on the same day, but neither Bhansali nor SRK appears to be in any mood to relent. The two clashed previously in 2007 when Bhansali’s Saawariya went up against SRK’s Om Shanti Om. And we all know how that ended for poor Bhansali… But reportedly the Devdas director is feeling more confident this time round, encouraged by the fact that his leads—Ranveer Singh and Deepika Padukone—are Bollywood’s reigning heartthrobs, and by the fact that Bajirao will be their first film together since his own smash hit Ram-Leela in 2014.
SRK’s Dilwale is no minor project either. Shetty has assembled a multi-starrer of sorts with Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge veterans Shah Rukh and Kajol, and paired them alongside young guns Varun Dhawan and Kriti Sanon. Trade pundits are betting that one of the two producers will back down eventually, and the money is on Bhansali, the shooting and production schedule of whose elaborate costume drama could stretch longer than expected. But right now it’s like that staring match; both sides are waiting to see who will blink first.
Why are Shah Rukh Khan and Kajol going to Bulgaria?
The two will be visiting the country very soon. Why? Read on to find out!
Shah Rukh Khan and Kajol have been the nation’s favourite on-screen couple, since their Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge days together. The two were last seen in Karan Johar’s film My Name Is Khan and will now reunite on the big screen in Rohit Shetty’s Dilwale. Wow! Millions went gaga when the same was announced as die hard fans of Kajol and SRK will finally get to see their favourite jodi on the silver screen once again. The film also features Varun Dhawan, who will play SRK’s younger brother and the actor’s ladylove will be essayed by Kriti Sanon. Where Varun and Kriti have already begun shooting for the big venture, SRK and Kajol are yet to come on board.
Reports suggest that King Khan is all set to travel to Bulgaria in the coming week, and will soon be joined by Kajol! Now that’s an exciting update, right peeps? SRK had been busy shooting for Rahul Dholakia’s Raees and will now begin his schedule for #Dilwale in Bulgaria. We bet there are some grand sequences planned for SRK and Kajol in the country. We are excited to know that the two will be finally coming on board for Dilwale. Stay tuned for more updates right here

I'm really glad Pritam is composing the Dilwale album over Vishal-Shekher, I think he could really make some magic. That 'Selfie Le Le Re' song from Bajrangi Bhaijaan is an awesome track! Only thing wrong with it is using 'selfie' in the title haha. I'm hoping he's working on something even bigger for Dilwale! SRK-Kajol back together, the music has to be absolutely banging!
When fans heard that Shah Rukh Khan and Kajol were cast in Rohit Shetty’s DIlwale, they frenzied over the fact that the classic jodi would reunite on-screen. Our ‘dilwale’ pair will be kick-starting the shoot for the same in Bulgaria tomorrow.
SRK and Kajol’s first day of shoot is in the beautiful city of Sofia, in Bulgaria. The shooting leg will wrap up on June 23rd. The Rohit Shetty film has already created an air of excitement in fans.
But for Devgns it is a work-cum-holiday scenario. Kajol’s hubby, Ajay, is already there for recce for his film Shivaay. And the pretty actress has flown in with her kids and mother-in-law, already.
Hotness Alert: Both Shah Rukh Khan and Varun Dhawan to go shirtless for 'Dilwale'
Monday, 22 June 2015 - 1:01pm IST | Agency: dna webdesk
Shah Rukh Khan and Kajol are now busy shooting for Rohit Shetty's Dilwale and if the first look is anything to go by, the two look smashing together and it seems that they have seriously cut off at least a decade from their age. But now there's an interesting news about the film which has got our interests piqued.
We hear that both SRK and his co-star Varun Dhawan will go shirtless together for a particular scene in Dilwale. Shah Rukh had previously flaunted a chiseled body last year in Farah Khan's Happy New Year. The actor was seen showing off his ripped eight pack abs in the film. Varun, on the other hand has always been one of the fittest actors in the younger generation. Whether it's his six pack statement in his debut film or his delicious eight pack abs in the recently released ABCD 2, Varun has always come with Hotness Alert.
Is dnaindia one of the reliable ones or one of those that make stuff up? I can't keep it straight! Frankly, this is not what interests me. Varun has proven to be a really good actor. I hope the script gives them some memorable scenes together!
Varun Dhawan is all set to join the Dilwale team in Bulgaria!
We know that Shah Rukh Khan and Kajol are shooting for their Rohit Shetty movie '#Dilwale' in #Bulgaria. The very popular on-screen couple of B-town will soon be joined by their younger co-stars Varun Dhawan and Kriti Sanon.
News is that Varun, who is flying high with his ABCD 2 success, is all set to head towards Bulgaria on the 25th. It will surely be a fun shoot in the picturesque city what with some of the most interesting talents of Bollywood collected there.
Dilwale is directed by Rohit Shetty and produced by Shetty and Gauri Khan .The film is scheduled for release on 18 December
