The Badshah bandwagon rolls into Calcutta today. Shah Rukh Khan will be in KKR country to promote his latest blockbuster Dilwale. SRK Dilwale Calcutta Tour, presented by t2 and 91.9 Friends FM, promises to be a song-’n’-dance-’n’-dialogue extravaganza on the East Bengal Club grounds. King Khan — with his chemistry co-star Kajol — will recreate moods and moments from the Rohit Shetty film that brings the most romantic jodi of modern Bollywood together 20 years after their classic Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge.
WHAT : SRK Dilwale Calcutta Tour, presented by t2 and 91.9 Friends FM WITH: Shah Rukh Khan and Kajol WHERE: East Bengal Club grounds (near Eden Gardens) WHEN: 6pm
ARE YOU READY TO BE DILWALEFIED? THE SHOW Remember the SRK shows over the years for Ra.One, Chennai Express and Happy New Year? Any SRK-powered stage fest always comes with the promise of entertainment, entertainment, entertainment... and this evening is going to be no different as ‘Raj’ interacts with thousands of fans in his inimitable style and shows off his signature steps the way only he can.
WHAT TO EXPECT The witty one-liners that are trademark SRK and a whole lot of moves from the master entertainer. With Kajol by his side — his dream co-star for over two decades — SRK is sure to get things rolling on stage from the get-go. Will the two match steps to their Dilwale hits — from the romantic Gerua to the playful Tukur tukur to the sizzling Janam janam? We sure hope so!
The die-hard SRKajol fan will be hoping that the two rustle up some of their most-loved lines — from “Bade bade deshon mein aisi chhoti chhoti baatein toh hoti rehti hai Senorita” to “Kuch kuch hota hai Rahul, tum nahin samjhoge.” Aah, nostalgia, SRKajol style!
THE FILM Directed by hit machine Rohit Shetty, Dilwale brings the Shah Rukh-Kajol pair together five years after My Name Is Khan. The film, that also stars Varun Dhawan and Kriti Sanon, opened big last Friday, earning a cool Rs 65 crore in India in its first weekend. Dilwale, in which SRK plays a gangster called Kaali who becomes the reformed Raj, is the superstar’s second collaboration with Rohit Shetty after the 2013 money-spinner Chennai Express. “Each time, the audience should feel that they are watching something bigger... something made with a lot more love and attention to detail than anything that they have seen from me before. The romance needs to be bigger... the action bigger,” is what SRK had told t2 about Dilwale during the film’s shoot in Hyderabad in October.
THE WEATHER Be ready for more than just a nip in the Tuesday evening air with the temperature around the 19 or 20-degree mark. A cool wind is expected to blow at 7kmph and make it even chillier. The sky will be cloudy but — fingers crossed — there is no rain on the horizon.

From the moment I made my way in through thousands of fans to my first peek at the stage and the set-up, I was soooo excited. It was a long wait for Shah Rukh, but no one complained as we danced to the Badshah’s hit tracks.
We laughed, we danced, we even fell and our feet were hurting as hell.... yet our excitement kept increasing by the minute. And then... I saw him. We got up on our chairs to get a better view and screamed his name out a million times... until he noticed us. He looked at us, he waved and blew kisses at us. I swear I felt weak in my knees after that... good thing I didn’t fall off the chair! He came, he danced and he conquered. I walked out as happy as ever, while the little girl inside me did a victory dance — Simran Kapur
Growing up in the ’90s meant growing up on Shah Rukh-Kajol films. I always saw my mom laugh and cry through their films, but I couldn’t understand this phenomenon... till Tuesday night. That evening at the East Bengal grounds, watching Bollywood’s romantic couple doing what they do best won me over — and how! From the moment they took the stage together till the time they danced to Janam janam at the end, Shah Rukh and Kajol had me completely under their spell. They sang, they danced, they cheered and they gave everyone a happy ending, just like one of their films — Anwesha Dhar
Festive lights, foot-tapping beats, euphoric atmosphere and deafening cheers for King Khan set the mood for what can easily be called one of the best evenings I’ve ever had. Having grown up watching Kuch Kuch Hota Hai at least a hundred times, seeing SRK so close was always a dream. Before they arrived, I danced to my heart’s content, because if there’s Ladki badi anjaani hai playing, sitting quietly is definitely not my thing. And then he arrived... his dimpled smile and black shirt enough to make every girl in the audience swoon. He waved, he did the trademark SRK arm stretch, delivered his most iconic dialogues... and won our hearts all over again — Rupsha Bhadra
SRK is my idol and a self-made man. He not only loves his fans but treats them with so much respect and admits that whatever he is today is because of his fans. I reached right on time. After a long wait he came and when I heard his voice my heart stopped for a moment. I was thinking: “What better Christmas gift could I ever get?” SRK made everybody laugh and dance, and ended with a dialogue from DDLJ. I really didn’t want him to go, but he came right in front of the stage and said goodbye to all of us. It was the best moment and the best day of my life. Thank you SRK for making me who I am today and making me have a hell of a time yesterday. Love you — Shreya Ghose
“I belong here,” said Shah Rukh to Kajol. In that crowd of screaming fans stood a girl waiting with all her heart, hoping that she wouldn’t faint. I have been a Shah Rukh Khan fan all my life, but hadn’t ever seen him in flesh and blood. The three-hour wait for SRK didn’t seem too long as I had been waiting for a moment like this for years. In the end, however, it was all worth it, as I smiled from ear to ear seeing the man himself doing all the “just SRK” things he does on screen... but this time for real. It’s his easy sense of humour and the remarkable sense of humility that make him a true dilwala. #MybestXmasgiftever — Debdutta Sengupta
I had fallen for the SRK charm when I was just five or six. Kuch Kuch Hota Hai and Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge were the films that started this madness. Several years later, the craze has only grown, with him becoming an example of all that I wanted in my partner. The event on Tuesday evening was simply the best. His dialogue-baazi was just out of the world and when he said the line: ‘Bade bade deshon main aisi chhoti chhoti baatein hoti rehti hai, Senorita,” I almost melted in my seat! — Sulogna Ghosh

THEY BROUGHT THE HOUSE DOWN AT SRK DILWALE CALCUTTA TOUR, PRESENTED BY T2 AND 91.9 FRIENDS FM A t2 campus team member on watching her demigod
The two hour wait for my dream couple was totally worth it when the ‘black’ duo worked in pumping up the energy of an almost tired crowd. Seeing them together for the first time off-screen was as magical they are on screen. The lucky winners got to recite dialogues and dance with them and I have never been more jealous of a girl than the one (Mansi Sharma Wadhwani) who was helped by SRK to put on her hair clip followed by a hug. I so wish I was in her place! The best part was when SRK warned Kajol not to mess with him in Calcutta. It is HIS city, after all. They promised to come back to Calcutta very soon... and I cannot wait for them — Asmita Nandy, third-year, Loreto College
FOR KING KHAN... ALL THE WAY FROM KRAKOW! On Tuesday morning, t2 found a mail in its inbox... from Polish couple Artur and Roksana Witkowska. The mail, written by Artur, was about his wife’s “addiction” to Shah Rukh Khan, how her biggest wish was to see the Bollywood Badshah in real life, and how they happened to be in Calcutta on Tuesday. Reason enough for t2 to play Santa to the Witkowskas — who hail from Krakow in Poland — and give them VIP passes for the SRK show. Later that evening, the two walked in for the mega event at the East Bengal Club dressed to kill — he in a black suit and she radiant in a pink sari (picture inset shows her dancing with “Calcutta Shah Rukh Khan” Shahnawaz).
The reaction at the end of the SRK show from SRK-fanatic Roksana? “I have been in love with Shah Rukh Khan since Kabhi Khushi Kabhie Gham... We want to thank t2 for such a lovely event. We sat in the first row and I never thought I would get to see Shah Rukh Khan for real. I felt as if I was dreaming. I could almost touch ‘His Majesty’! On stage, he was an absolutely perfect man and actor. It was fun and very entertaining. It is the best Christmas gift ever.
Thank you so much t2 for the passes!”

- Love and romance, SRKajol style! The Dilwale Shah Rukh Khan & Kajol
THE DIL-HAARE: ‘SRK-SRK-SRK... KAJOL-KAJOL-KAJOL’ THOUSANDS SCREAMED OVER FOUR HOURS
COLOUR OF LOVE “We are not very good dancers, but we will do Gerua for you.” Can it get more magical than Shah Rukh Khan and Kajol close dancing to their Dilwale hit Gerua? The two — he sexy in a black suit, she stunning in a black and gold Sabyasachi sari — brought a capacity crowd at the East Bengal Club grounds to their feet a little after 9pm on Tuesday evening as they recreated their hot, hot chemistry on a cold December evening. Looking into each other’s eyes, laughing and giggling and giving us the SRK-Kajol we have loved since DDLJ. Magic. Pure.
I’LL BE THE BIRDS! SRK fan Mansi Sharma Wadhwani (yes, the lucky one whose hair clip SRK helped fasten) walked up on stage to dance to Gerua with her Man. But Shah Rukh had a different idea “Mansi will be Kajol, Kajol will be Shah Rukh and I will be the birds!” And what fun we had seeing Shah Rukh the bird — like the ones in Iceland that we see in Gerua — flapping his wings and flitting around the stage. Avoiding the Jimmy Jib, he showed that give him any role, SRK will entertain you. In a way no one else can.
SRK WITH SANTA Somewhere towards the end of the evening hosted by 91.9 Friends FM RJs Smriti and Sharique, a fan tossed a white plastic packet on stage... and Shah Rukh promptly picked it up. What did he find inside? Some Christmas goodies, including a miniature Santa Claus. Even as thousands of fans surged forward in the hope of a handshake or a hug, SRK gestured to the crowd that he was taking Santa home for his little ones... “For the kids,” he mouthed, smiling the smile that crinkles his eyes. Awww!
SOME CLEAVAGE... FOR CALCUTTA! Quizzed by Jimmy Tangree of 91.9 Friends FM on the sub-zero temperatures in Iceland while shooting for Gerua, Kajol trolled SRK with: “I told him, ‘Maine patli chiffon sari pehni hai… so the guys should also show as much cleavage, na?” “In Calcutta, I can show everything!” quipped SRK, proceeding to show some, er, cleavage. And the crowd ROARED!
A straight-from-the-heart t2 chat with our favourite dilwale — Shah Rukh Khan and Kajol
We’ve taken interviews of leading pairs together so many times. But never have we felt the kind of friendship, love and just the history that these two share. Then again it’s unfair to compare any other pair with Shah Rukh Khan and Kajol. An hour after the superhit SRK Dilwale Calcutta Tour show at East Bengal Club, on Tuesday night, t2 sat down with arguably the greatest Bolly screen couple and had a heart-to-heart chat about matters of the heart.
Many congratulations on the box office numbers. Personally, what is the best compliment you have received for Dilwale? Kajol: It was last night in fact when my uncle called after watching the film. I was really, really touched. My father passed away six years back. And my uncle kind of took his place somewhere. So he saw the film and he said, ‘I’m so proud of you... You’re the first girl who’s been working for 25 years and you’re still here and you’re still doing the big films. Your father would have been so happy and proud. You are still lighting up the screen’. [To SRK: I started crying. I cried and cried.] Shah Rukh Khan: That’s so sweet. For me, a friend called me and she said a very sweet thing. She said the whole film felt like a big hug... it was like someone was hugging warmly throughout the film. K: Awww. [SRK to K: I’ll tell you who said it. You know her.]
Right from Baazigar to DDLJ to Kuch Kuch Hota Hai to K3G to My Name is Khan, you two come together every three-four years but there’s never a sign of rust on the chemistry. It’s as if you guys exist together. How do you do it? [The two look at each other with smiles stretching from ear to ear and have that beautiful comfortably silent moment.] K: I love that question. I really love that question. SRK: (To K) You answer. K: I don’t know. We don’t even meet each other in between. I think we didn’t meet for as long as two years during a period but when we do meet, we pick up from where we left off. There’s never a period of oh I’m uncomfortable or he’s uncomfortable or what should we say to each other. We have a lot to say to each other when we meet! [Both laugh out loud] SRK: Also I think more than us the people around the world, they just like us. I think we have never been special in terms of glamour, in terms of looks or in terms of a dance moves. We are not known for anything special that we do. We are just so ordinary that everyone considers us to be part of their lives. So, we do about 10%, 90% is done by the people who watch the film. I’m being honest. And we have discussed this sometimes. Yeh karte hain... jo bhi karenge log pyaar denge.
There’s a strange sense of confidence... hum log theek hi honge, yaar! People love us. We are part of... K: ...so many families. They have adopted us. SRK: And it’s like even if you are wrong, it’s okay. K: It’s how you forgive your family for everything. Love them unconditionally. SRK: When we go up on stage, we are like Kajol khadi ho jaa yaar, they’ll love us anyway. Because we are honest about it. We are really honest. We are not the coolest. We are not the hottest. We are not the best. K: We are the best! SRK: Yes, people say that. K: But we do try the hardest. SRK: That we do.
[Plates of Mutton Kakori Kebab and Chicken Malai Kebab come in. Politeness personified, Kajol asks: “Can I please eat? I’m very hungry.” SRK quietly puts the napkin on Kajol’s lap.] In true Rohit Shetty style were there two members from his team as SRK-Kajol dummies for the scene rehearsals? K: There were two boys. SRK: There were two boys. [Both laugh out loud] K: They would do our part and then we would come in, change everything and go back. SRK: Very sweetly they would do it... K: And we would laugh so much when they were saying our dialogues. SRK: And they would never forget any of the lines no matter how much we laughed. K: The guy who used to do my part had long hair, by the way.
The one-shot five-minute date scene from Dilwale will make it to the best SRK-Kajol scenes of all time. How many takes did that require? SRK: Two. The second one was just for safety. I think the first take made it to the film. We rehearsed one evening from 4 to 6 and we reached the location very late. K: It was supposed to be a twilight scene. SRK: So we had to finish in 30-40 minutes. Very difficult logistically... the camera was on a big car and on a crane and hundred people running around during that shot.
Which are your favourite scenes? K: My favourite scene is the one with him and Varun. When Varun comes home after getting to know of his past and he asks him: ‘You left her?’ And he replies, in one heartbeat... ‘I’ll find many girls like her but I’ll never find another brother like you.’ I had tears in my eyes. I like that one and the scene next to that, when you (to SRK) come charging and hold my throat. SRK: Yes that was intense.
The vintage SRK-Kajol intensity... K: No we’ve never really attacked each other! SRK: We’ve never been so angry at each other. We have usually cried and solved our problems. [Laughs] K: We’ve always had problems with others in our films. We’ve never had a problem between us before.
What does it take for you two to come together? You’ve done an Aditya Chopra film and three Karan Johar films. That was among friends. But this one’s a completely different school.... SRK: Let me tell you honestly. Rohit had narrated to me the story first and he had suggested Kajol. And I realised for whatever it is worth, this film is not going to move without Meera being played by Kajol. I’m not deriding anybody else but some films are meant for some actors. We were like ‘hope she says yes’. And while we are close friends, proximity only works better when we don’t take each other for granted. She would only do a film if she liked the script. And I would only offer a film which is good enough for her. In fact I go and advise her on other movies, ‘don’t do that one’. And she asks me: ‘Why are you doing this?’ So I told Rohit tum bahut dhyaan se jaake script sunaao. And I am very fortunate, first as an actor and then as a producer, that she liked the script. Because it’s always special to work with Kajol. And I hope we have done something special again. K: At East Bengal Club earlier in the evening, they had done a mash-up for us. There were bits and pieces of Gerua along with some of the scenes and I told him that we’ve done some really cool work in the film. I’m really happy. Really happy with us!
Kajol, which are the Shah Rukh films you’ve liked in the period you were not working with him? SRK: Say each and every one. Say it. K: Each and everyone. I think the one thing I like about him is the fact that for each and every one of his films, he is totally and completely enthusiastic about it. He brings the same passion, the same interest, the same wanting to each and every film.
OH MY GOD HE KISSED MY FOREHEAD! IT WAS JUST CRAZY, CRAZY, CRAZY, CRAZY! I WASHED ONLY HALF MY FACE TODAY! — A FANGIRL SURVIVES (BARELY) TO TELL A SPECIAL SRKAJOL TALE
Anwesha Mukherjee, actress Swastika’s daughter and a t2 intern, had a queen-sized King Khan experience she will never forget. Not only did she scream herself hoarse at the East Bengal Club grounds as Shah Rukh Khan and Kajol romanced thousands, she also spent quality time with the stars at a private party after. She lived to tell this tale to t2...
I was wearing faded jeans and a tee for the show at East Bengal Club but I made sure I was carrying a change of clothes. I was going to meet Shah Rukh Khan at a party after the show. I was not going to meet him in jeans! How random would that be? I wanted to look my prettiest when I met him. The wait at the East Bengal Club was long and he was there for a very short time, but every minute of was worth it. He made it all worthwhile. How he danced with his fans and made them feel special. He is King Khan and I am sure being that charming runs in his blood. You can just feel his love for his fans. I mean just to be in the same place as him is just something else. If you are a fan you’ll know what I mean. You just feel soooooo happy. Even if it is for a short time, it just lightens up your day.
The best moment I think was when he made Kajol pretend to be him and dance with a fan to Gerua while he pretended to be a bird! How he moved around the stage flapping his arms like a bird! I loooved every single time he made a fan feel special. I don’t know why I was screaming his name along with the other fans hoping to get him to notice me. I completely forgot that I was going to meet him afterwards! At that moment I was caught up with all those thousands of fans. A ground full of Shah Rukh fans… that rush was just something else. You just want to be his fan and yell and scream his name hoping he will notice you. And when he does… OH MY GOD!
By the time I reached the party, Shah Rukh and Kajol had already reached. But I still made it a point to change into my dress. I had to look my prettiest to meet him and oh my gooood, he complimented me on my dimples!!!! Aaaaaaaa! He actually told mom your daughter has lovely dimples and she is very pretty. And I was like ‘Oh my god, he just said that!!!!!'
My mom introduced me to him and I said nothing. I was just standing there, just staring at his face. And then he hugged me. He hugged my twice! The second time he hugged and kissed my forehead! It was just crazy, crazy, crazy, crazy! I washed only half my face today!
That’s when you become completely crazyyyyyyyyy!!!!!! YESSSSS!!! the man and the woman and me! Swastika’s Instagram from the evening with SRKajol He was standing right in front of me and I was obviously freaking. Pabitrada (t2 photographer) was asking for pictures and Shah Rukh had his hand stretched out towards me and saying ‘come, come’ but I just couldn’t move. So Kajol, who was standing in front of me, asked me what happened and I told her ‘I think I’m going to faint’. And she was like ‘Why don’t you do something, why don’t you go and faint in his arms, he can catch you’. I was like, ‘Can I do that?!’ And she replied ‘Absolutely’. And I was like ‘OH MY GOD!’ He was still saying ‘come, come, come’ and when I gave my hand he just pulled me towards him and I was like ‘NOOOOOOOO, oh my god this is happening to MEEE! I don’t want to die so fast.’
Shah Rukh is sooooo nice. I went to take a selfie with Kajol and she said ‘I am terrible at selfies’. I told her that’s okay I’ll make you look pretty. She said ‘If you want a good selfie then tell Shah Rukh, he is the king of selfies’. When I went to get my selfie with him for Snapchat he took the phone and asked if the lighting was okay. Then he told me, ‘Put your chin up, no not so much, yes this perfect’, and then clicked it. Wow! It was 2.30 in the morning (yes, you read that right) and there I was being directed by Shah Rukh for the perfect selfie!!! I was so stoked!
Mom was sitting next to Shah Rukh and I was sitting next to Kajol at dinner and she is reeaallly nice. I asked her how it was working with Varun (Dhawan) as I was a huge Varun fan. She said, Varun’s a sweetheart, a darling. And she said, I’ll tell Varun that there is this really cute girl who is mad about him. I was like oh my god now Varun will know I exist!
Kajol could understand that I was freaking out. So when I wanted an autograph I had the book ready and all but I didn’t have the guts to ask him. So she called him and said ‘Shah Rukh there is this trembling chick sitting next to you who wants your autograph’. Shah Rukh goes ‘trembling chick?’ and looks at me and smiles. And I’m like someone just kill me, kill me now!
So at one point he was talking about something and hitting my hand to demonstrate something and all I could think was oh my god he is hitting my hand, I can’t take it anymore!
When I got back home I just couldn’t sleep. I kept telling Ma the same things over and over and again. And she was like, can you calm down?
I mean I’m still so, so stoked. I’m just in that headspace of oh my god I will never ever forget what happened.
